I first visited Baja ten years ago to check out a remote surf spot on the west coast of Baja called Scorpion Bay. I was looking for the ultimate Mexico adventure.
After a few hours of driving through the wilderness, I finally arrived. The setting was picture perfect as the sun was setting over the Pacific Ocean. The area held a bohemian charm as I saw bronzed surfing pro’s sitting on the beach watching passing dolphins and waiting for the perfect surf break. A perfect Mexico adventure hideaway to surf, chill out and disconnect.
The surrounding landscape was peppered with tiny colourful hamlets and local gauchos rounding up their cattle. The red volcanic soil baking under the sun is apparently perfect for growing blue agave and more than 300 million of the plants are harvested each year to produce the world famous tequila.
I finally arrived in Cabo and pulled up at the stunning Las Ventanas Hotel. The hotel is one of my favourites due to its location. It has it all – luxurious rooms, unparalleled service and an unwavering attention to detail. I was immediately whisked off to my room overlooking the Ocean. It was a stunning moment, nothing but the sounds of waves crashing and a fresh ocean breeze.
Over the coming days I discovered what makes Baja such a special place. In the pursuit of my Mexico adventure dreams, I raced buggies through the desert and along remote beaches, tequila tasted with a tequila master, rode horses with the local gauchos and sampled their local chillies, which can be described as amazing, but also like eating molten lava!
If you scuba dive or snorkel, the marine life is quite simply extraordinary! The area is described as the “Galapagos of North America”. Grey, blue, fin and humpback whales, pelagic sharks, whale sharks, sperm whales, sea lions and orcas. Jacques Cousteau once dubbed the Sea of Cortez, ‘The World’s Aquarium’.
Baja is a precious and wonderful place. The ultimate playground for families and thrill seekers, yet it is perfectly suited to just chilling with a fine wine and stunning food. If you quest for a unique 5* escape, with a twist,
Baja will leave you spellbound. For more information, get in touch.
