Experience New Zealand: A World Traveller’s Awe-Inspiring First Take
We sent one of our friends on one of the experiences we have to offer at Momentum. She reported back about what she is up to out there and we loved what she had to say so much that we asked her to write a blog about it!
As a world traveller, I have been to sites unseen by most people. In fact, it takes a lot to surprise me. From eating foods I didn’t know existed to encountering wildlife beyond the realm of nature, my travels have carried me physically and mentally to the edge. Yet my latest adventures have managed to send me far past the edge of experiences. Here in New Zealand I have broadened my own horizons and explored some of the most fascinating places on this planet. Check out some of my all-time highlights from this awe-inspiring country, thanks to Momentum Adventure.
Swimming with Dolphins at the Bay of Islands
I have seen dolphins before, but never in my life have I had the opportunity to swim with these majestic creatures in the wild. I got that chance to do so in the Bay of Islands. Jumping in the warm ocean waters to swim with dolphins in their natural habitat is something I highly recommend to any animal lover.
Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland
When I traveled to the Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland in Rotorua, New Zealand I truly had an out of body experience. I felt like I’d left the earth and had landed on another planet in the solar system. Here are these massive craters formed via the volcanic lakes of this region. The dramatic lakes appear in a kaleidoscope of colours, such as the lemon yellow, copper and neon green that I saw on my adventures there. It’s no wonder why the native Maori people call this Wai-O-Tapu, which means ‘sacred waters’ in their language.
Walk the Tongariro Crossing
As an avid outdoors person I knew I had to check the Tongariro Alpine Crossing off of my bucket list while in New Zealand. This astounding and challenging hike is considered one of the most sought out day hikes on the planet. I made sure to have my camera ready to capture the picturesque views from the volcanic peaks of Mts. Ruapehu, Ngauruhoe aka Mt. Doom from the Lord of the Rings, and of course, Tongariro.
The crossing, which is a World Heritage site, features the National Park Village that was perfect for a warm meal and a cozy place to rest up overnight. For the next day, I took a guided mountain bike ride that Momentum recommended, that gave me a more up close and personal experience of this gorgeous landscape.
Finishing Up the Adventures
Before I leave New Zealand I have a couple of other grand adventures on my must-do list. For starters, I cannot leave without experiencing the Class 5 rapids along the Wairoa River. I’m planning this accordingly since this river only flows for 26 Sundays a year from October to April. I also have scheduled a private tour through the world-renowned Marlborough wine estates. The Marlborough region is famous across the globe for producing some of the most flavorful wines and olive oils. I expect this will be the perfect way to wind down after my mighty adventures through New Zealand.
