We were lucky enough to be the first to test the new KTM Freeride E-XCs – here is our story. A castle, mud, sweat, a big smile and no gears….
When I first launched Momentum, I looked at lots of names for the business but “Momentum” just stuck. Why? Because it means ever-evolving, always looking forward, always looking for something unique and different. It just summed up the way I wanted to operate – to innovate and play outdoors!
This quest is in our DNA and filters into everything we do. I feel that this is why KTM Sportmotorcycle first approached us. I have always loved dirt bikes, heck, anything with two wheels! After a brief chat, Momentum and KTM joined forces. Our first mission was to test their latest innovation – an electric dirt bike! The KTM Freeride E-XC! Next, was to get it into as many incredible destinations as possible.
Our first location was chosen for many reasons. Herefordshire, in the UK, is known for its stunning landscape, for being the home of the legendary British Special Forces the SAS and, to top it all off, home of Land Rover’s off-road test centre. Combine all these elements and we have the ultimate playground for the Momentum Defender and our futuristic KTM Freeride E-XC dirt bikes.
Our base was the historic and regal Eastnor Castle: massive bedrooms and incredible food, all in our own private castle for the weekend. It was beyond expectation, but I wasn’t about to complain! But the real hook? 2,000 acres of prime wilderness to escape into.
Our mission on the first day was to get lost, really lost! We were looking for dirty, muddy, wet, tough and boulder-ridden terrain. It’s the kind of mission we love. By the time we found the location it was dark and raining – not exactly what we had in mind, but perfect for testing the hardcore off-roaders we were dealing with. For the next four hours we blasted and waded through rivers, smiling from ear to ear as we navigated and traversed this remote landscape. In almost total silence, we were truly amazed at the sound, or lack of sound, that these bikes made. It was a revelation and quite an odd experience!
Hand on heart, we were all left stunned by the performance not only of the KTM Freeride E-XCs, but of our Defender too. At no point did we get stuck, not even remotely stuck. I can ride and I love it, but by no means am I a professional. These KTM Freeride E-XCs made me feel like a total rockstar, plowing through everything we threw at them…they just kept going! And all with our faithful Land Rover Defender, loaded with four people and a ton of gear, lighting the way. It kept us safe, warm, dry and never stopped pushing. I love our Momentum Defender, it makes myself and the team smile every time we jump in her… As sad as it may sound, it made me feel like a proud father when your kid comes home with great grades. ‘Well done’ was well and truly deserved.
The whole two days where non-stop adventure. We set up remote camps and sat around the fire telling tales of days past and why we love what we do. The outdoors is our fix and I think we were all fixed to the brim and ready to fall asleep under the stars. We shall dream of mud and good times…goodnight!
If you want a taste of off-roading with a mix of luxury, join us and I promise that you will be smiling for many months to come….
