Narnia, vikings, blonde hair, incredible scenery combined with some of the most kind and beautiful people I have ever experienced. All of this to sum up my first impressions of this mystical land.
As I poke my head out of the airport looking for my Norwegian contact, the fresh air hits me like a strong espresso. This, I feel, is a clear welcome to the far north of Europe in Western Norway. Once back in I see a beaming blonde haired lady heading directly for me. Boom, I am greeted by a huge hug and perfect English. “Welcome to my home”.
The landscape In this part of Norway can only be described as dramatic and stunning. A place I have dreamt of coming for years, not knowing really what to expect, I’m definitely not disappointed! As we drive to our lodge and home for the coming 3 days, my head swings from side to side like an owl as I try to take in the scenery. My host can’t help but smile as she see’s me trying to take everything in.
We turn into a small gravel road and head into the abyss of an enchanting pine forest. After about 5 minutes we pull up to a truly welcoming and heart warming selection of log cabins, with roofs adorned with grass and peppered with wild flowers. I am shown my cabin and as I enter I am frozen in ore, in front of me is a perfect view of one Norway’s mind blowing Fjords. I’m truly humbled as I’m transported into the land of goblins and Vikings.
Some time later I hear a gentle knock at my door “Are you ready, we can’t be late!” I follow thier lead as I’m escorted on a short walk to our mode of transport, kayaks! We jump in and head out into the heart of this magnificent fjord. The water was incredibly still and calm, we glide along the edge of the fjord with uninterrupted and far reaching views. The silence is deafening, words fail to describe how small and insignificant I feel compared to this magnificent landscape.
“Ok, we have arrived”, says Oscar. We pitch our kayaks on the shore and I follow them up a tiny path towards an ancient looking stone house. “This is one of the oldest homes in the region and was home to a family of 13.” “13!” I said, let me explain, this house was tiny! It had just 4 rooms and seemed more suited to a hobbit than a large family.
We are greeted by a burly looking man and his wife with open arms. “Come in come in.” I hit my head as we go in and we are shown into the dining room filled with old glass vials filled with herbs, oils and other rather potion like, colourful fluids. As we sit down we have panoramic views over the fjord. We are then served food directly from their land. Deer, cheese, butter, bread, beer and a cocktail of berry infused fjord water. It was quite simply otherworldly, so clean, so simple and so tasty. This combined with a Norwegian charm, I was sold!
My next few days have me spell bound in a land we quite often forget is right at our fingertips. Sailing the Fjords in a 400-year-old Viking boat, with 2000ft walls of rock either side, to scuba diving in crystal clear water with an array of local marine life. The finale to the trip was the chance to spend the night in a lighthouse on a remote private island, which was simply incredible. An experience only available to Momentum clients.
